YFM – LYFE Festival 2018

On 16 June 2018, South Africa’s Youth Day holiday, the Johannesburg radio station YFM hosted a music and lifestyle festival at the Old Park station in Newtown.

Bad Weather was brought on board by Have You Heard, to work alongside Melissa Weigel of Moment Factory, Montreal.

The brief revolved around the upstairs section of the venue which consisted of a main stage and a separate, B-stage DJ booth in the center of the dance floor. Due to the age of the station and natural aesthetic of the architecture, we were forced to think of innovative ways to rig lighting components so as not to draw the eye from the station’s ornate ceiling and features.

We avoided using a generic LED screen as a backdrop for the main stage and instead opted for a dynamically lit cyclorama. Directly in front of that, diagonal video-mapped strips rose from the ground to the ceiling over the audience.

With a diverse lineup from edgy fashion pioneers to popular hip hop fan favourites, every performance was well received.
