About This Project

CTEMF 2015

“Established in 2012 as a platform for South Africa’s burgeoning electronic music culture and industry, the Cape Town Electronic Music Festival (CTEMF) has gained international recognition for being one of the most relevant and forward-thinking events on Africa’s music festival calendar. International pioneers and innovators share the stage with the bright lights of the South african scene while the inner workings of this rapidly growing industry are unpacked and explored through the workshops.”

CTEMF is one of those exciting projects allow us to push the design envelope and try and break the creative barriers.
Taking that challenge breeds innovation.

Our good friend and Technical Manager of CTEMF, Marcia Alves commissioned us in assisting her with the full creative design of this years CTEMF. Focusing largely on lighting and video mapping – we came up with the idea of creating a unique hanging mapped set (with a twist).

Normally a mapped set or performance backdrop would be a flat surface and in some form of square/rectangle dimension. We chose to break this ideal and create 7 hanging V-shaped triangle columns, which we would not only map onto for the VJ’s content but also use them as a scenic show piece.

After some offsite testing and experimenting we designed a system that would allow the columns to rotate during the show while the VJ’s had their content playing – this gave the element of motion and evolution during the night all while the visual journey continued.

Adding space and depth with the lighting elements which broke through the scenic and visual elements to bring mood and ambience to the amazing space that is Cape Town City Hall, we approached the design with a delicate hand with a focus on breakup gobos and textures with deep saturated colours to keep the focus on the performance.
